Going SMART
“A Wildlife Monitoring and Patrolling data system to improve conservation effectiveness"
Bhutan is among the 55 counties in the world to have adopted SMART (Spatial Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Tool) as an important law enforcement and monitoring tool for conservation of its rich biodiversity. Over the years SMART implementation expanded through co-financing of GEF-LDCF, WWF and BFL projects to cover all the forestry and conservation-related activities that the Department of Forests and Park Service (DoFPS) renders through its field offices.
Through the financial support of the BFL, national data model version 2, Cross Conservation Area Analysis model and National SMART Implementation Protocol (NaSIP) 2020 has been developed and circulated to field offices on 31/03/2020 upon technical review made by the Technical Advisory Committee of the DoFPS to standardize overall SMART implementation and information management. The first ever national SMART report will be generated in June 2020, as the national Cross Conservation Area model has now been developed for compiling data of all 24 field offices. NaSIP and national data model circulated in March 2020 will guide the field offices all through data collection to report submission.
In addition, BFL provided funding support in purchase of SMART equipment and patrolling gears for facilitating SMART data collection and monitoring across protected areas and biological corridors. All 10 protected areas and 8 biological corridors will implement SMART through BFL funding support by the end of year 2. SMART will go a long way in conserving Bhutan’s rich natural heritage through the long-term financial support from BFL.
